Why Wasps, Yellow Jackets, and Hornets Show Up
These insects follow food and shelter. Sugar sources (fallen fruit, open soda cans), protein (grills, trash cans), and heavy insect activity draw them in. Eaves, soffits, play structures, valve boxes, and deck undersides offer protected nesting sites. In the Treasure Valley, queens emerge in spring, colonies grow through summer, and activity often peaks late summer into early fall.
- Common concerns
- Painful stings (unlike honey bees, most wasps and yellow jackets can sting multiple times)
- Aggressive nest defense near doors, decks, and kids’ play areas
- Seasonal re-nesting in the same conducive areas if conditions don’t change
Species We Commonly See in Boise-Metro
- Paper wasps building open umbrella-style nests under eaves and porch ceilings
- Yellow jackets nesting in wall voids, landscape edges, or ground cavities
- Bald-faced hornets forming large aerial paper nests in trees and on structures
- Mud daubers creating small mud tubes on siding, sheds, and garages (usually non-aggressive but still a nuisance around entries)
Where Nests Are Found
- Eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, and pergolas

- Persistent activity around trash, compost, and outdoor eating areas
Our Wasp, Yellow Jacket, and Hornet Control Process
1) Same-Day Inspection
We identify the species, map every active and satellite nest, and spot the conditions that keep drawing them back (food sources, shelter points, entry gaps). Service area includes Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, Eagle, Kuna, Star, Middleton, and Garden City.
2) Safe Nest Neutralization and Removal
Targeted applications matched to species and nest location (aerial, structural void, or ground)
Careful physical removal of accessible nests and webbing/paper residue
Void treatment and sealing recommendations where nests connect to wall or soffit cavities
3) Exterior Barrier and Harborage Reduction
Strategic treatments at eaves, soffit seams, fascia gaps, deck undersides, and utility penetrations
Guidance for trash management, grill cleanup, and fruit tree drop control
Recommendations for screens, sealing, and weather-stripping where activity is recurring
4) Follow-Up and Seasonal Plans
A maintenance plan through spring and summer helps interrupt new queen starts and stops late-season pressure, so nests don’t reappear in the same spots.
What Attracts Wasps and Yellow Jackets
Open food and drink around patios, especially sugary beverages and meat scraps
Unsealed trash and recycling bins
Fallen fruit and heavy insect activity near lights
Steady water sources such as dripping spigots, birdbaths, or poorly drained gutters
Prevention Checklist
Use tight-fitting lids on outdoor bins and rinse containers before recycling
Clean grills after use; avoid leaving pet food outside
Reduce night lighting or choose warmer bulbs near doors to cut insect prey
Trim vegetation touching structures; check eaves and play sets weekly in spring/summer
Seal small gaps at soffits, fascia, and utility penetrations
Safety Notes About Stings
Most wasps and yellow jackets do not leave a stinger behind; honey bees typically do.
For mild symptoms, wash the site, apply a cold pack, and consider an over-the-counter pain reliever or oral antihistamine as directed.
Seek immediate medical care for signs of severe allergy such as trouble breathing, throat or facial swelling, widespread hives, dizziness, or nausea.

Yellow Jackets, Hornets, & Wasps in Boise, ID
Unlike honey bees, hornets build new nests each spring. Each nest is started by a fertilized female. She usually lays her eggs inside, and these eggs will eventually hatch to become the nest's workers. The colony continues to grow throughout the spring and summer, with the same queen laying all the eggs to produce the new members of the growing nest. The nest usually survives through mid to late autumn before the entire colony dies (usually with the onset of cold weather).
Because hornets are only active during the warmer months of the year, they are significantly more common in warmer areas of the country, such as the southeastern portion of the United States. Still, they are found in most states within the continental United States, including Idaho.
Are Yellow Jackets and Wasps Dangerous?
Wasps and yellow jackets are both beneficial and harmful to humans. Wasps help pollinate flowers and other plants, and yellow jackets help by killing other pests. However, they can also be dangerous.
For those who are allergic to these pests, their stings can result in life-threatening symptoms, such as difficulty breathing. Unfortunately, many people do not know they are allergic until they are stung by these pests.

How To Treat a Wasp or Yellow Jacket Sting
Yellow jackets and wasps can become aggressive when they feel their nests are threatened. If you’ve been stung and begin experiencing an allergic reaction, seek medical attention immediately.
For more mild symptoms, you can treat a wasp sting by washing the site with soap and water. If the stinger is still in your skin, remove with tweezers and dispose of it in the trash.
To treat the pain and swelling, you can use an ice pack and take anti-flammatory medication. Some topical creams can also help ease the pain and soothe the area.
